Hi Dan,

I just stumbled across your site whilst trying to research the UK Ancestry Visa, and it's hands down one of the best source of info I've found! Really appreciated. I have a quick question that I'd love help with - it's unrelated to the dependancy issue (my partner is currently in the UK on his own visa), but involves the employment requirement. I read above that you provided no proof of employment in the UK in your application, however the UK Ancestry Questionaire that I have seems to require proof of employment (through a signed letter from a potential employer) or evidence that you have been actively seeking work (through an exchange of correspondence with a potential employer). I'm a New Zealander and a recent university graduate, I'm certainly planning on working over there but I'm finding it difficult to apply for jobs and actually get responses from employers while I'm still all the way on the other side of the world - it's a bit of a catch 22, can't get the visa without the job, can't get the job without the visa. I was just wondering what your experience with the employment requirement was (or anyone else who may be reading this!). I realise it may have changed since you applied, and I can find little info anywhere online (though I may just be looking in the wrong places).

Thanks,

Jess

cont... sorry computer failure. can gather evidence over the 8 years of photos, wedding invites, bill payments from bank accounts but that is about all we have to go on. We will probably get stat decs from people that are in respectable positions to verify our relationship. The problem I see will be the time apart but having been together longer than most cases I am assuming there may be some weight in that. My partner will go back to Aus in Feb 2011 and I am not sure whether going back together is better or staying in the UK for the purpose of the application. I understand the application requirements and am guessing evidence will be the key hoping for any good advice,
Chris

Hi,
I have a very intersting question for anyone to shed light on because it is an unusual situation. My unmarried parnter of 8 years has been in the UK on a tier5 youth MOB visa since Mar 2009 and I have recently arrived July 2010 some 16 months later on an ancestry visa as I was studying and working. Proof of 2 years continuous living arrangements prior to application will not be possible but we have continued in a relationship over this period. Providing good evidence of joint accounts etc will also be difficult as we have rented with friends and haven't really had joint names in bills etc except for lease agreements.
We are currently joining names for bills and bank accounts and can gather

Hi Hayley,

We're not 100% sure. Your situation is slightly different to ours was. From what we understand and what we were told throughout our process - you most likely have to go back to Australia to apply/change visas.

I hope it all goes well!
Cheers, Dan and Theresa

Hi

I'm an Australian currently in the UK on a Tier 5 Youth Mobility Visa which is due to expire on 10 January 2011. My partner is British so I am travelling back to Australia when my Visa expires to apply for the Unmarried Partner Visa.

All of the information on this website has been very useful. I have been told two conflicting pieces of information from the UKBA i.e. first told I could apply for the Unmarried Partner Visa from the UK (switch from Tier 5 Youth Mobility to Unmarried Partner) and was later told I can't switch out of that visa category and would need to travel back to Australia to apply - I'm guessing the latter is correct (i.e. that I need to leave) but just after triple confirmation from you?????

It would be a great help!

Thank you and thanks again.

Thanks heaps for your blog!! This has been the only helpful thing I have been able to find on the UK Ancestry Unmarried Partner Visa! We are New Zealanders and I have been trying to fill in the online application form - Just one thing I am hoping you can help me clarify. When selecting the visa type you are applying for, I am confused between the selection of 'Dependant for more than six months' and 'work permit dependant more than six months'. If I select the first option does this still allow me to be employed full time in the UK, or do I need to select the work permit option to be eligible to work? Any help would be much appreciated!!

Hi Dan & Theresa,

This might seem a strange question but dont wish to make an issue of a visa application where its not needed.

I am a UK citizen, residing in Australia. My GF of 18 months is an Australian resident about to apply for an Ancestry Visa to move to the UK with me.

In marital status, do we need to disclose that she is a)single or b)with unmarried partner? Its just marital status does not seem relevant given i have right to enter the uk as a citizen and she has the right to have an ancestry visa. I'm also concerned it will pollute the application with a questionable issue that isnt really an issue at all.

Any help appreciated!

Hi there, soaking up all this information, relieving some stress!! Have a question similar to Josh.

My partner is applying for a defacto on my ancestry visa, and it asks for the start and end dates of my intended work.

We have not left yet, nor secured jobs. This is something we planned to do after we had been approved, save wasting time if something wasn't right and we did not get a visa first try.

So my question is this, is it safe to leave a section like this blank? And if so would we get a chance to explain before the application was rejected??!

Thanks in advance!!

Hi Pola,

This post was written back in November 2009 and it looks as though the websites and information have changed slightly since then.

If you go to http://www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk/ you will be able to find out more information about the visas.

Best of luck,
Dan and Theresa
